Sky Trees is inspired by Charles's observation of Willie Howe in Yorkshire, an ancient mound crowned by a small group of trees. Struck by the simplicity of the landscape, he made a quick drawing of the scene, filling the form with yellow. This simple sketch became the starting point for a sculpture that transforms a familiar view into a bold and abstract form. The sculpture explores the connection between the canopy of the trees and the sky. Its simple form captures the feeling of looking upward through the branches, reducing the landscape to its most essential elements.

The development of Sky Trees began through hands-on experimentation with everyday materials, allowing Charles to explore the shape and balance of the piece. The idea then evolved into a scale model before being refined through detailed digital drawings, combining traditional sculptural methods with contemporary design processes.
